Alprazolam, also sold under the brand name Xanax, is a prescription medication commonly used to treat acute anxiety, social phobia, many types of stress reactions, and panic disorder.

Alprazolam, which belongs to a class of medications called benzodiazepines, works by enhancing the action of a certain natural chemical in the body called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) to reduce abnormal levels of arousal in the brain and have a calming effect on the nerves.

How Do You Use Alprazolam to Treat Anxiety and Panic Disorders? 

It is very important to consult your doctor before starting any new prescription medication. Also, always make sure to follow your doctor’s advice closely and use the medicine as prescribed and as directed on the prescription label.

Use alprazolam as directed by your doctor. Be careful not to use more medication, use it more often than directed, or use it for longer than recommended to prevent long-term addiction. It is recommended to take this drug on a titration approach, which means it should be taken gradually. Also, since alprazolam can also cause withdrawal symptoms, it is recommended not to stop taking your prescribed alprazolam until directed by your doctor to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

You should always follow the dosage requirements given for this drug. Adults taking conventional tablets are prescribed an initial dose of 0.25-0.50 mg three times a day. This dose can be slowly increased up to a maximum of 3 times a day, divided into periods if necessary.
